CALL 811 BEFORE YOU DIG

Planting a tree? Installing a fence? Putting up a new mailbox? Building a deck? Whether your digging project is big or small, it's important to know what's below before you dig.

A new, federally-mandated, nationwide "Call Before You Dig" number now makes that process easier. A free call to 811 at least 48 hours before you dig can help you avoid serious injury, expenses, or even possible penalties. Don't take any chances with your safety; call 811 to have utility services located before digging.

Every dig. Every time. Call 811 for a locate.

Indiana law requires all contractors and utility companies to locate all existing underground utilities that may fall within their work areas.

As a business or homeowner, it is your responsibility to call 811 at least 48 hours before you plan to dig anywhere on your property. This will give the utility companies time to locate and mark all of the underground lines and pipes, for your personal safety and to prevent damage to your property. There is no charge or fee for this service. To begin the process, here are the basic steps needed for a smooth project:

  • Outline your project with white paint
  • Call 811 (no charge or fee)
  • Know your county and township where you are digging
  • Provide the name and phone number of the person digging (if not you)
  • Give the utility companies at least forty-eight hours to respond
  • Dig with care!

When you start digging, try to stay at least 24 inches away from the marked lines. If you're planting a tree, remember to consider the diameter of the root system as the tree matures, and don't plant larger trees below overhead power lines.
