The Street Department, with its staff of 37 full time employees, is responsible for a variety of different jobs for maintaining City streets and other public right-of-ways. Primary responsibilities include snowplowing, sealing cracks, and preparing old streets for new asphalt topping and patching potholes for approximately 165 miles of public streets. In addition, manpower and signage for traffic control is supplied for these projects. Weather permitting, street crews patch streets daily with the goal of responding to any specific problems within 24 hours. Clean city streets are maintained by street sweeping and the fall curbside and leaf pick up programs, which collect leaves on a weekly basis.

The Street Department has recently been equipped with computerized sign making equipment which provides them the ability to make all traffic control signage for the City. The repair, maintenance and installation of traffic control signage is also a priority of the department.

The Street Department provides the attendants that staff the Mishawaka Environmental Center, which is one of several locations throughout St. Joseph County. Working closely with the Solid Waste District of St. Joseph County allows us to provide the first full-time staffed household hazardous waste collection site in the State of Indiana.

The Environmental Center, at 1105 E. 5th Street, is open year round, Tuesday-Saturday, from 8:30am to 3:15pm. The Center provides an outlet for Mishawaka residents to bring small amounts of yard waste and common household chemicals to be recycled.

The Environmental Center no longer accepts bottles, cans, newspapers, cardboard or other common household products for recycling. Mishawaka residents can recycle those products through the City Curbside Recycling Program.

STREET MAINTENANCE

The Mishawaka Street Department provides many services that help maintain the quality of our neighborhoods. Depending on the season of the year, they include street-sweeping, re-paving, patching, crack-filling, resurfacing, snowplowing, curbside leaf collection and storm damage pick-up. They have become experts in ice storm clean-up after weeks of around-the-clock tree debris pick-up.

The 2006 Summer Street Program was awarded to Brooks Construction Company,, the low bidder, who provided and placed all street materials and services. The City requested the use of two different surface mixes. In an attempt to extend the life of the surface for higher traffic volume streets, a polymer-modified mix was utilized. The remainder of the streets resurfaced in the Summer Street Program were paved with 1-1/2” Hot Asphalt Concrete Surface. In 2005, the City paved and reconstructed approximately 99 blocks of residential and collector streets through this program.
