CITY OF MISHAWAKA CONTRACTORS MUST BE LICENSED
      Listed below are the
types of contractors that require a license in order to do work
in Mishawaka. It does not matter if they are subbing for a general
building contractor, doing a job under their name or under a homeowner's
name. They still MUST BE LICENSED BUILDING CONTRACTORS.

*HEATING/AIR CONDITIONING/VENTILATING CONTRACTORS ARE
LICENSED UNDER SEPARATE ORDINANCE.
     BELOW ARE INSTRUCTIONS
FOR OBTAINING A LICENSE AND AN EXPLANATION OF THE LICENSING ORDINANCE.
A: The basic context of the Building Contractor's
Ordinance is as follows:
1. It shall be unlawful to engage in business in the City of
Mishawaka as a building contractor without first holding a valid
annual license as herein required be this chapter.
2. "Building Contractor": The term "building contractor" shall
mean and include any person, partnership, corporation or other
entity engaging for remuneration in the building construction
business of new construction, repair, alteration, or remodeling
for which a building permit is required by the Building Code of
the City of Mishawaka, but excluding electricians, plumbers, heating,
air conditioner and ventilation contractors. The annual fee for
a Building Contractor's license shall be $100.00.
3. Surety Bond: Each applicant for license must also provide a
surety bond payable to the City of Mishawaka in the penal sum
of $5,000.00, conditioned upon faithful compliance with the provisions
of the building code as it relates to work performed by the applicant
and agreeing to pay all damages, costs, and expenses caused by
the applicant through failure to comply with such provisions.
4. Examinations: Applicants shall be examined through a written
examination which will be given by the Building Commissioner or
his designee. A grade of 70% shall be passing to the applicant
in so far as the test is used for partial qualification.
5. Failure to comply with the Building Code and all other applicable
local, state, and Federal laws and regulations shall be grounds
for revocation of a building permit, issued hereunder, and may
be grounds for refusal by the Building Commissioner to renew the
annual Building Contractors License.
6. Each citation issued under this ordinance shall impose a fifty
dollar ($50.00) fine payable to the Municipality through the Office
of the Building Commissioner.
7. Additionally, whenever any work is being done contrary to the
provisions of the Municipal Code of the City of Mishawaka, Building
Commissioner, or his designee, may order the work stopped by notice
in writing served on any persons engaged in the doing or causing
such work to be done, and any such persons shall forthwith stop
such work until authorized by the Building Commissioner, or his
designee to proceed with the work.
8. If you have any employees, you must submit a copy of your Worker's
Compensation Insurance.
B. Steps TO obtain a Mishawaka Building Contractor's
License:
l. Take a test and pass with 70% correct. Testing accomplished by a professional testing company/organization or a current license with similar or greater testing standards may be accepted by the Building Commissioner.
2. Fill out application form which will be reviewed.
3. Submit a Surety or Permit Bond in the amount of $5,000.00 payable
to the City of Mishawaka.
4. Provide a copy of liability insurance; also Worker's Compensation
if you have employees.
5. Pay a fee of $100.00.
