REGULAR MEETING OF THE MISHAWAKA

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY/UTILITY BOARD

January 13, 2009

 

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by President Gary West at 10:05 a.m.  All members were present.  Mr. Prince moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of January 6, 2009, and accept them as circulated.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

 

Bid Openings:

There were no bid openings.

 

Mayor’s Comments:

Mayor Rea announced that a brief staff meeting would follow today’s meeting.

 

Department Head Reports:

Building Commissioner Brock Hundt presented the Building Department statistics for the month of December, 2008 which included $9,000,000 for the Unity Surgical Hospital addition.  Mr. Hundt said the total for 2008 was $316,000,000 in construction costs compared to $116,000,000 for 2007, which was a record.

 

Park Superintendent Mike Faulkner submitted a request to remove one tree and stump in the right-of-way at 301 West Battell Street, which has been analyzed and recommended for removal by the Park Department landscaper.  Mr. Watson moved for the Board’s approval to remove one tree and stump at 301 West Battell Street.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried. 

 

Mr. Faulkner also submitted a request to remove one tree and stump in the right-of-way at 402 West Grove Street, which has been analyzed and recommended for removal by the Park Department landscaper.  Mr. Watson moved for the Board’s approval to remove one tree and stump at 402 West Grove Street.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

 

Community Development Director Lory Timmer presented a Professional Services Agreement for a limited Phase II Environmental Site Assessment of the former Fashion Cleaners facility located at 1026 Lincolnway East from Quality Environmental Professionals, Inc. (QEPI) and requested the Board’s approval for the lump sum amount of $5,161.00.  Mr. Prince moved to approve the Professional Services Agreement from QEPI for a Phase II limited environmental site assessment of 1026 Lincolnway East for the lump sum amount of $5,161.00.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

 

Public Comments:

Street Commissioner Mike Watson said the Street Department has used 1,650 tons of salt so far this season; almost half of the 3,500 tons available.  The crews have been out all weekend and are doing an excellent job.

 

Mr. West said Monday, January 19, is a holiday for City Hall, but will not affect regular trash collection.

 

Unfinished Business:

There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:16 a.m.
