REGULAR MEETING OF THE MISHAWAKA
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY/UTILITY BOARD
January 7, 2014

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by Vice-President Mike Watson at 10:01 a.m. All members were present except Mr. West. The Board organization was determined for 2014. Mr. Watson moved to maintain all Board members in their current positions. Mr. Prince seconded, motion carried.

Mr. Prince moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of December 31, 2013, and accept them as circulated. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Bid Openings:
There were no bid openings.

Mayor’s Comments:
Mayor Wood expressed his gratitude to the Street Department for their hard work and dedication clearing the streets allowing Mishawaka to stay open for business and not having to declare a “state of emergency” as other local communities did.

Mayor Wood announced a staff meeting would follow today’s Board meeting.

Department Head Reports:
Mishawaka Utilities General Manager Jim Schrader said he had received word from AEP asking residents to conserve electric usage between the hours of 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. during the extreme cold temps.

Fire Chief Dale Freeman announced that Adam Behnke has successfully completed the written Firefighters Aptitude Examination, the Physical Agility Test administered by the Mishawaka Firefighter Pension Board as well as the medical and psychological testing required for becoming a member of the Mishawaka Fire Department. He also recommended that he be approved for probationary employment effective January 7, 2014. Mr. Prince moved that Adam Behnke be approved for probationary employment effective January 7, 2014. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Street Commissioner Mike Watson commended Central Services for their outstanding job removing snow during the snowstorm this week.

Approval of Claims:
Mr. Watson moved to approve five (5) Claim Dockets for Utilities and Civil City as submitted by City Controller Becky Miller for a total amount of $6,710,445.88. Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

New Business:
Mr. Watson said requests for renewal of Secondhand Store Licenses have been received from the businesses listed below:

Mr. Prince moved to approve as presented. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Old Business:
Hearing regarding the charges preferred against Firefighter Eric Hazen, set for Tuesday January 14th, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Council Chambers.

A request for Notice of Recognition of Encroachment submitted by Bethel College for installation of a directional sign on Lowell Avenue continued under advisement.

Unfinished Business:
There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at
10:12 a.m.
