REGULAR MEETING OF THE MISHAWAKA

BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY/UTILITY BOARD

July 7, 2009

 

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by President Gary West at 10:04 a.m.  Mr. Watson moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of June 30, 2009, and accept them as circulated.  Mr. West seconded; motion carried.

Mr. Prince arrived at 10:08 a.m. 

 

Bid Openings:

There were no bid openings.

 

Mayor’s Comments:

Mayor Rea advised that a brief staff meeting would follow today’s Board meeting.

 

Department Head Reports:

Chief Witkowski requested the Board’s approval to demote Officer Brad Haney to the rank of Corporal.  Officer Haney has taken a voluntary demotion from Sergeant and transferred from the NET Unit - Afternoon Shift to the Afternoon Shift of the Uniform Division, retroactive to July 1, 2009.  Based on the recommendation of Police Chief Witkowski, Mr. Watson moved to approve the voluntary demotion of Officer Brad Haney to the rank of Corporal retroactive to July 1, 2009.  Mr. West seconded; motion carried.

 

Building Commissioner Brock Hundt presented the Building Department statistics for the month of June, 2009.  Mr. Hundt said permits for six new single family homes were issued in June for a total of eleven this year.  Overall, permits are down 200 from last year.

 

Community Development Director Lory Timmer requested the Board’s approval to receive proposals for Professional Planning and Design Services for the property located at 402 Lincolnway West, also known as Mishawaka Furniture.  This is relative to the conversion of the property into senior living apartments.  Proposals for this project will be received by the Board for opening at the July 21, 2009, meeting.  Mr. Prince moved for the approval to receive proposals for Professional Planning and Design Services for 402 Lincolnway West.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

 

Engineering Director Gary West requested the receipt of bids for Milburn Area Sewer Improvement Project, Division “F” by DLZ, to be opened July 28, 2009, and moved for the Board’s approval.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

 

Mr. West requested the receipt of bids for Juday Creek Force Main Rehabilitation by Lawson-Fisher to be opened August 4, 2009, and moved for the Board’s approval.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

 

Mr. West also requested the receipt of bids for a High Efficiency Turbo Style Aeration Blower for Wastewater Treatment Plant by Greeley and Hansen to be opened August 4, 2009, and moved for the Board’s approval.  Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

 

Mr. West presented a Dedication of Right-of-Way for Division Street and McKinley Avenue from Lot 286 Normain Heights Subdivision and moved to accept same.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

 

Mr. West requested the Board’s approval for a Quit Claim Deed to transfer title of Lot 286 Normain Heights Subdivision from the City of Mishawaka to the Redevelopment Commission, commonly known as 2304 Normandy Drive for Habitat for Humanity House and designate Lory Timmer as signatory on behalf of the Redevelopment Commission, and moved for the Board’s approval.  Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

 

Approval of Claims:

There were no claims to approve.

 

New Business:

A license application has been received from Haley Jachimiak for a Tattoo and/or Body Piercing Establishment, located at 2336 Miracle Lane.  A public hearing has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2009.

 

Old Business:

The request from the BK Club for a “Tailgate Party” on Sept. 12, 2009 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. was continued under advisement.

 

A request from St. Bavo’s Catholic Church for approval of an August (date to be determined) fundraising event was continued under advisement.

There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:20 a.m.
