CITY OF MISHAWAKA 

HISTORIC PRESERVATION COMMISSION – NOVEMBER 5, 2014

 

A regular meeting of the Mishawaka Historic Preservation Commission was held Tuesday, November 5, 2014 in Room 205, City Hall, 600 East Third Street, Mishawaka IN.
In attendance: Commissioners – Michael Bultinck, David Eisen, Judy Grey, Tony Obringer, Kate Voelker, David Vollrath, Cliff Zenor; Advisors – Jennifer Johns, Nancy Seidler, Bryan Tanner, Shirley McAlister; also in attendance: Ken Prince, Paul Hayden, Todd Zeiger, Marcellus Lebbin.

NEW BUSINESS

Continuing Education Program: presented by Paul Hayden, Community Preservation Specialist, Indiana Landmarks.
Mr. Hayden presented an educational program on appropriate exterior paint colors for historic and vintage houses.
PUBLIC HEARING

COA #14-02 Daniel Ward House

Requesting a certificate of appropriateness to move Daniel Ward House next to Blackburn and Green office. This was built in the Italianate style. Hearing before the City of Mishawaka (Plan Commission) next Tuesday to create a lot for the house. It will be next to the Soccer Zone. Indiana Landmarks is working with Tom Blackburn. An addition on the back will not be moved. A new foundation will be put under the house. No staff report was given. There was no remonstrance. Marcellus Lebbin of May Oberfell represented the new owner for the hearing.

Findings of Fact

The Daniel Ward Farm significant example of Greek Revival/Italianate style. Currently local landmark and its important to our city’s architecture and early family of St. Joseph County. Contains high degree of integrity which is significant for its continued local landmark designation. The home was a farmhouse open fields. Significantly altered future preservation. Faction important of structure solid footing why should be moved.

Motion on the Findings of Facts carried.

Motion for the approval of COA carried.

Members are interested when its being moved so they can watch. It will possibly be documented. University of Notre Dame Film Department to put one camera on the truck and some in the house. They will edit it together into a 3 or 4 minute video. The actual move will take close to 9 hours. They will not start before 9am to avoid rush hour. Working with Granger Community Church to move through their property. Also have INDOT on board.
