REGULAR MEETING OF THE MISHAWAKA
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY/UTILITY BOARD
December 29, 2015

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by Vice-President Mike Watson at 10:00 a.m. All members were present except Mr. West. Mr. Watson moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of December 22, 2015, and accept them as circulated. Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

Bid Openings:
There were no bid openings.

Mayor’s Comments:
Mayor Wood was not available for today’s Board meeting. Mr. Watson announced there would be no staff meeting.

Department Head Reports:
Fire Chief Dale Freeman requested the Board approve the voluntary demotion of Lieutenant Kevin Gnivecki to the rank of Master Firefighter, effective January 1, 2016. Mr. Prince moved to approve as presented. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Mr. Watson on behalf of Engineering Director Gary West presented a letter from Walsh & Kelly agreeing to extend 2015 Curb and Sidewalk Program Unit Prices for the 2016 construction season per IC 5-22-17-4, and moved for its approval. Mr. Prince seconded; motion carried.

Approval of Claims:
City Controller Rebecca Miller requested approval of three (3) claim dockets in the amount of $573,568.82. Mr. Prince moved for approval. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

New Business:
A request from Sunburst Committee to utilize Mishawaka Parks and the Riverwalk on Saturday, June 4, 2016, for marathon and half marathon events was taken under advisement.

Public Comments:
Carol Davis said Mishawaka Flea Market, 423 E. Fourth Street, is under new ownership and management and they would like to have events during nice weather such as MDA runs, Toys for Tots, and vendors outside all summer. Would that be something they could do?

Mr. Prince said he recommends starting with the Planning Department with a plan of what they want to do and then we can determine what’s needed. He said he wants to encourage businesses to be successful and are willing to work with them.

Open Items:
A hearing for Second Hand Store License for Julie’s Used Appliances, 2302 Lincolnway West, remained under advisement.

Unfinished Business:
There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:08 a.m.
