REGULAR MEETING OF THE MISHAWAKA
BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY/UTILITY BOARD
May 31, 2016

 

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by President Gary West at 10:00 a.m. All members were present except Mr. Prince. Mr. Watson moved to dispense with the reading of the minutes of May 24, 2016, and accept them as circulated. Mr. West seconded; motion carried.

Bid Opening:
Bids were opened for Liberty Drive and Elizabeth Street Improvements and are summarized below:

Mr. West said these bids would be forwarded to the consultant for their review and evaluation.

Mayor’s Comments:
Mayor Wood thanked all departments for their help with the Memorial Day Parade. Mayor Wood said he received many positive comments from parade goers.

Mayor Wood announced a staff meeting would follow today’s Board meeting.

Department Head Reports:
Fire Chief Bryon Woodward requested the Board promote Firefighter John McMillen from his current rank of 1st Class Firefighter to the rank of Master Firefighter, effective June 4, 2016. Mr. Watson moved to approve as presented. Mr. West seconded; motion carried.

Engineering Director Gary West requested the Board approve plans and authorize the receipt of bids for Fourth Street LTCP Improvements to be opened June 21, 2016, and moved for its approval. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Mr. West requested the Board approve plans and authorize the receipt of bids for CIPP Sewer Rehabilitation 2016 Various Locations to be opened June 21, 2016, and moved for its approval. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Approval of Claims:
There were no claims to approve.

New Business:
A request from Blair Hills Community Association to close three intersections for Blair Hills Fourth of July Bike Parade on Monday, July 4, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Mr. Watson moved to approve. Mr. West seconded; motion carried.

Mr. West moved to approve request from Fraternal Order of Police #36 to hold the “Fallen Officer Scholarship Ride” on Saturday, August 6, 2016, beginning at 2:00 p.m. using Ewing Avenue and Dragoon Trail. Mr. Watson seconded; motion carried.

Old Business:
A request from St. Pius X Church, Granger, for various street closures of county roads, and east bound lanes of Beacon Parkway for 5K and 1 mile fun run on Saturday, August 20, 2016, continued under advisement.

Chief Witkowski said they have been working with St. Joseph County Special Olympics regarding their request to hold a 40 mile motorcycle ride on Saturday, July 9, 2016, leaving and returning to Beutter Park with police escort. The organizers have decided to forgo the police escort and have the ride but all riders will obey traffic signals.

Unfinished Business:
There being no additional business brought before the Board, the meeting was adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
