BOARD OF PUBLIC WORKS AND SAFETY / UTILITY BOARD
October 3, 2017

The regular meeting of the Board of Public Works and Safety/Utility Board was called to order by President Ken Prince at 10:03 a.m. Ms. Miller and Mr. Watson were absent. There was no quorum so Board business could be conducted.

Mayor’s Comments:
Mayor Wood announced a staff meeting would follow today’s Board meeting.

Public Comments:
David Straughn, 305 George Street, said he had four items:

  1. Missing street sign at Liberty and LaSalle Avenue.
  2. The Water Department property in the 1500 block of Linden Avenue looks like a pig sty with overgrown vines on the fences in 400 block of Victoria Street. He said it doesn’t look like it’s been tended to for many years.
  3. Joe Dits published an article over the weekend in the South Bend Tribune regarding budget item for ipads for Code Enforcement Department for $250,000.00. He said that comes to approximately $42,000.00 per ipad. Mayor Wood said that the Tribune had gotten the numbers wrong.
  4. Mr. Straughn said there was not enough disclosure on several items; 2 items in Parks and 1 in Police. He said for Parks there was a line item for GPS units for golf carts and one for $75,000.00 for consulting fees. He said why the need for GPS units and why not get Purdue to consult if it’s for agriculture or botany and such. Mayor Wood said consulting fees were for design services for park upgrades.

Mr. Straughn asked about maintenance on the MRAP vehicle. How much does the City pay for maintenance fees? Mayor Wood said nothing as the city maintains the vehicle, if necessary, and it’s maintained just like any other City vehicle such as a snowplow, pick ups, etc.
